Dementia Care in Sydney
We provide dementia-specific therapy programs across Sydney, aimed at supporting people at all stages of their journey.
Music and Memory Therapy uses music that has significance to help people connect to past memories. Benefits of this kind of therapy include better wellbeing, opportunities for socialising, reducing reliance on medication, deepening family relationships, and reducing behavioural management issues.
Reminiscence Therapy uses music, photos, sight and sound to reach memories in parts of the brain that are functioning. By recapturing the emotions and feelings connected to those memories, therapists help enhance the memory of those with dementia and enable better connections with the past and present.
‘This is your Life’ storytelling therapy uses a visual diary, similar to a family photo album. It can also include letters, postcards, certificates and other memorabilia that reminds the individual of people or places they loved, which they have lost connection with as a result of dementia.
Sensory Therapy incorporates Montessori products designed for people with dementia. Montessori childhood approaches have proven to be beneficial for people with dementia. Sessions are built around the interests of each person, designed to improve engagement, independence and confidence.
Validation Therapy recognises that rather than trying to bring the person with dementia to our reality, it is more positive and beneficial to enter their reality. This builds empathy, compassion and trust, and creates a sense of security. This therapy reduces anxiety for families and carers and enables effective communication with the person living with dementia.
What is dementia home care?
If you have dementia, or you are caring for someone with dementia, you may benefit from an extra pair of hands – whether it’s help with the housework, nursing services at home, support with nutrition or social activities. This can also help prevent premature entry into a residential aged care facility, if you would prefer to continue living in your own home.
The Australian Government offers in home dementia care to eligible people at a subsidised cost. This could include help with the housework, personal care services, help with taking medication, nursing services, meals and nutrition, or modifications to make your home easier to live in. It can also include respite care, so your family members and loved ones can take a break from their caring responsibilities. To start the journey or find out more about aged care services in Australia, visit the My Aged Care website and apply for an aged care assessment.
