In home dementia care in Australia

One way to access affordable dementia care in your home is by applying for a Home Care Package from My Aged Care.

A Home Care Package is a coordinated set of care services that are provided for you at home. They include help with things like transport, keeping your home clean, doing the laundry, cooking or exercise classes with other seniors. Home Care Packages are subsidised by the Australian government to make them more affordable for seniors.

If you have been diagnosed with dementia and it significantly impacts your daily living, you may be eligible to receive a Home Care Package. You must be over 60 years old (over 50 for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people).

Dementia Therapies

Dementia Caring provides locally run therapy programs in Perth, to support individuals during their journey through each stage of dementia. All of our programs are enjoyable, based on evidence-based research and incorporate techniques that enhance quality of life for participants. There are available as part of your in home dementia care service.

Music and Memory Therapy stimulates the mind and senses through music. We use music that is meaningful to participants to help them connect to past memories and associations. Benefits include being happier and more social, reducing reliance on medication, deepening family relationships and reducing behavioural management issues.

Reminiscence Therapy uses music, photos, sight and sound to reach the memories that dwell in parts of the brain that are functioning. By recapturing the emotions and feelings connected to those memories, therapists help enhance the memory of those with dementia and enable rich connections with the past and present.

‘This is your Life’ storytelling therapy uses a visual diary, similar to a family photo album. It can also include letters, postcards, certificates and other memorabilia that reminds the individual of people or places they loved, which they have lost connection with as a result of dementia.

Sensory Therapy uses specialised techniques and incorporates Montessori products designed for people with dementia. Montessori childhood approaches can also be beneficial for people with dementia. Therapy is built around the interests and ability of each person, and improves engagement, independence and confidence.

Validation Therapy recognises that rather than trying to bring the person with dementia to our reality, it is more positive and beneficial to enter their reality. This builds empathy, compassion and trust, and creates a sense of security. This therapy reduces anxiety for families and carers and enables effective communication with the person living with dementia.
